Charlie Chaplin's Silent Shorts
Thursday, September 11, 2025
08:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Newtown Theatre
120 North State Street, Newtown, PA, USA
Come be transported back to the early 20th century when the historic Newtown Theatre presents “Charlie Chaplin’s Silent Shorts” on Thursday, September 11 at 8:00 p.m. This special event will feature several of Chaplin’s silent films accompanied by Not So Silent Cinema Orchestra – a chamber music ensemble that performs live music to silent films.
The three films being screened that day include “The Cure” (1917), “The Adventurer” (1917), and “The Pawnshop” (1916).
Prior to the mid-1920s, all movies were silent, and dialogue was transmitted through mute gestures, mime and title cards, which contained a written indication of the plot or key dialogue. For added effect, silent films were commonly accompanied by musicians who provided a live score in the movie house. The Newtown Theatre, which showed its first film in 1906, was one of these places.
Online tickets are $22 per person or $17 for theatre members. Any remaining tickets will be sold for $32 at the door on the afternoon of the show (if available). All seating is general admission.
