02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Newtown Theatre

120 North State Street, Newtown, PA, USA

The historic Newtown Theatre will present “Hammerstein: Stories & Songs” on Wednesday, May 8 at 2 PM.

Part talk/part concert, this special matinee event will feature Will Hammerstein, grandson of legendary Broadway lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, sharing stories about his grandfather. It will also feature pianist Marc Sherman and vocalist Jill Salkin, who will perform a selection of Rogers and Hammerstein’s best-known songs.

Oscar Hammerstein II, in collaboration with Richard Rodgers, wrote some of the most popular musicals of all time, including Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music.

In this fascinating program, Will tells Oscar’s story – from his 1895 birth into a theater family, through the ups and downs and major influences of his career, and to his death in 1960 at his beloved Highland Farm in Doylestown.

Highland Farm is where the legendary Rodgers and Hammerstein partnership was formed, where Oscar did most of his lyric writing, and where he mentored a high school student named Stephen Sondheim. A founding board member of Oscar Hammerstein’s Highland Farm, Will also explores his efforts to turn the historic property into a museum.

Marc Sherman has been entertaining in the Philadelphia area and surrounding counties as a bandleader, pianist, and vocalist for the past 50 years. Jill Salkin has performed throughout the tri-state area for decades. Her lovely voice, warm personality, and engaging patter bring a lot of enjoyment to her audiences.

Online tickets are $22 per person or $17 for theatre members. Any remaining tickets will be sold for $32 at the door on the day of the show (if available).

All seating is general admission.

This event is presented by On Demand Programs and Events.
